The Beginning

Hello Everyone,

I have created this blog as a way of documenting my travels throughout the new year. For those of you who don't know, I have the amazing opportunity to travel for an academic semester abroad starting in January 2013! I will be traveling with other students from the University of Guelph to take courses in Paris, France. While stationed in Paris for four months, I hope to travel around Europe and to use this blog as a way of keeping those at home updated on my adventures! I am very excited (and maybe a little bit nervous) as my trip is fast approaching...below is some information about what I can expect:

Those of us from the University of Guelph are not staying at a particular university - we actually have a professor from the Guelph History department traveling with us! She will be teaching us two France history courses and we will have two other instructors who will teach us about French film and Paris architecture.

Because we are not actually rooted to a Paris University, we will be staying at the Cite Internationale in Paris. As Canadians, we have the privilege of staying at the Maison des Etudiants Canadiens...For those of you who are not french literate, that means basically a house just for Canadian students! Check it out here: http://www.ciup.fr/les_maisons/maison_des_etudiants_canadiens

The "International City"is in the 14th arrondissement (translation: district) in Paris. This district is known for Montparnasse, a historic area notorious for the artistic and intellectual population that inhabited it in the early 20th century (think Picasso, Zola, Hemingway, Dali, etc....!) Across from the Cite Internationale is the Parc Montsouris, a public park which I look forward to exploring very soon!

This is pretty much all of the information I have so far! I look forward to updating this blog as frequently as I can...the next time probably being 5 days from now when I am freshly arrived in Paris!

Time to go pack!
